Falcons blast Tigers in non-conference victory

The University of Montevallo baseball team evened up its record with a 16-9 victory on the road at Stillman College in a non-conference game Feb. 7.

The Falcons (2-2) compiled 16 hits, including nine for extra bases, while scoring 16 runs.

Juniors Andrew Hill and Austin Dubberly, a pair of Pelham High School graduates, and freshman Zack Willoughby led the Falcons with three hits each.

Hill was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Willoughby was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Dubberly was 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Junior Vincente Andrews drove in three runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple, a walk and a run scored. Senior Chris Ross, a Pelham High School graduate, had a pair of doubles while going 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior Heath Peterson was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Blaine Rosenberg, an Oak Mountain High School graduate, drove in a pair of runs while going 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a walk.

On the mound, junior Kincaid Koehler got the start and went 2 2/3 innings with a pair of walks and three runs given up. Junior Devon Davis took over and pitched 1 1/3 innings while walking a pair and giving up six runs. Davis took home the win, improving his record to 2-0 on the season.

Four Montevallo pitchers combined for the final five innings, giving up just four hits and not allowing a run while striking out four.

Stillman opened the scoring in the second as they plated a run to take a 1-0 lead. Montevallo responded in the third with five runs off of four hits and a Stillman error. Ross and Dubberly each picked up RBI doubles in the inning while Andrews hit an RBI sacrifice fly. The final two runs scored on a two RBI single by Rosenberg.

The Tigers responded with two in the bottom half to cut the lead to just two. In the fourth Stillman tacked on four runs to take a 7-5 lead.

The Montevallo offense exploded in the fifth as the Falcons scored eight runs off of five hits. Andrews hit an RBI triple, Willoughby crushed a two-RBI double, Hill hit a two RBI double, Dubberly tripled to score Hill, Andrews earned a bases loaded walk and the final RBI came on a fielder’s choice by York.

The Tigers once again responded with two runs in the bottom half but the Falcons answered with a pair of runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh. Dubberly and Peterson hit RBI singles in the sixth while Hill had an RBI single in the seventh.

Both teams combined for just one hit over the final two innings as the Falcons took home the 16-9 win.

The Falcons will return to action this Friday, Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. as they host Delta State University in non-conference action.
