Falcons win women’s tennis opener against Clark Atlanta

The University of Montevallo women’s tennis team opened the 2012 season at home Feb. 10 with a 6-3 victory over the defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions, Clark Atlanta University.

Freshman Niki Polcerova, senior Helene Nordgreen, junior Amy McGucken and freshman Meagan Stevens, a Hope Christian School graduate, all picked up two wins on the day.

Polcerova took home the No. 1 singles’ match 6-2, 6-4 and then teamed up with Nordgreen to win the No. 1 doubles’ match 8-6. Nordgreen won the No. 3 singles’ match 6-4, 6-0. Stevens won the No. 4 singles’ match 6-4, 7-5 and then teamed up with McGucken to win the No. 2 doubles’ match 8-6. McGucken also won the No. 5 singles’ match 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the most contested match of the day.

The Panthers won the No. 2 singles’ match after junior Lauren Blair had to retire due to injury. Clark Atlanta also won the No. 6 singles’ match 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 and the No. 3 doubles’ match 8-0.

The Falcons will look to continue to roll this Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. as they travel to Tuskegee University.
