Calera wrestler claims individual section championship

Calera High School wrestler Coby Mize claimed an individual section championship Feb. 11 in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A-1A section meet Feb. 11 in Montgomery.

Mize claimed the 160-pound individual championship at the section meet and advanced to the AHSAA state tournament, which will be held Feb. 16-18 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Mize pinned Hunter Pointer of Walter Wellborn in 1:00 in his quarterfinal match before earning a 7-2 decision over Alan Santana of Cleburne County in his semifinal match.

Mize earned a 7-0 decision over Kory Spivey of Holtville in the 160-pound championship match at the Class 5A section meet.

Teammate Danny Diaz also qualified for the Class 5A state tournament after finishing runner-up in the 220-pound division at the section meet.

Diaz pinned Austin Blanton of Lincoln in 5:57 in his quarterfinal match before pinning Logan Moore of Piedmont in 4:49 in his semifinal match.

Diaz was pinned by Matthew Smith of Ranburne in 3:00 in the 220-pound championship match at the Class 5A section meet.

Calera finished 11th in team standings at the Class 5A section meet.
