The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Georgia Southwestern State University squad, which shot better than 50 percent for the game, in a 69-51 loss in a Peach Belt Conference contest Feb. 11.

Montevallo (9-13 overall, 4-9 in Peach Belt Conference) led early in the first half, but a run by the Hurricanes midway through the first half gave Georgia Southwestern a double-digit lead, which it would not surrender the rest of the way.

Montevallo was led by junio Trena Moore-Smith, who scored 14 points and grabbed seven boards. She also dished out three assists and made three steals. Freshman Tayor Beverly added 10 points and five boards.

Junior Zena Nasiloski shared the rebounding lead with Moore-Smith as she grabbed seven boards as well.

The Falcons shot just 32.1 percent from the field but hit 36.4 percent from 3-point range. The Hurricanes were on fire from the field as they hit 52.8 percent of their attempts and nailed 43.8 percent from 3-point range.

The rebounding and turnover battles were nearly even with the biggest difference coming in the shooting percentages.

Montevallo led by as many as five points early in the first half, but with 12:20 left in the period and the Falcons up 14-9, Georgia Southwestern went on a 20-4 run to take a 29-18 lead with 6:03 left. The period would end with the same gap as the Hurricanes entered halftime up 35-24.

The lead would remain around the 11-point mark for most of the second half. Late in the period the Hurricanes made a small run to push their advantage to 18 as time expired, 69-51.

The Falcons will return to action this Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 4:30 p.m. as they travel to Peach Belt Conference rival Columbus State University.
