Wildcat, Hornet each advance to state wrestling tournament

One wrestler from both the Shelby County High School and Chelsea High School wrestling squads advanced to the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A state wrestling tournament following a Class 5A section meet Feb. 11 at Tallassee High School.

Shelby County wrestler Chase Weeks advanced to the Class 5A state tournament after finishing runner-up in the 152-pound division at the section meet.

Weeks pinned Clay Bailey of Chilton County in 1:20 in his quarterfinal match and earned a 10-2 major decision over Austin Underwood of Mortimer Jordan in his semifinal match.

Weeks dropped a 16-1 technical fall decision to Josh Highland of Tallassee in the 152-pound championship match.

Shelby County finished 10th in team standings at the Class 5A section meet.

Chelsea High School wrestler David Downard qualified for the Class 5A state tournament after finishing fourth in the heavyweight division at the section meet.

Downard pinned Dylan Grantham of Shelby County in 1:03 in his quarterfinal match before being pinned by Jesse Rowlen of Tallassee in 2:34 in his semifinal match.

Downard pinned Spencer Watley of Chilton County in 2:20 in his consolation semifinal match before dropping a 14-2 major decision to Tyler Holsomback of McAdory in the heavyweight third-place match.

Chelsea finished 12th in team standings at the Class 5A section meet.

The AHSAA state tournament will be held Feb. 16-18 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
