Falcons finish third at Coastal Georgia Invitational

The University of Montevallo women’s golf team finished third in team standings Feb. 13-14 at the Coastal Georgia Invitational held at the King and Prince Golf Club in St. Simons Isle, Ga.

The Falcons finished with a two-round score of 674, which left Montevallo just three strokes out of a tie for second. Freshman Ashlee Beck led the Falcons with a score of 163, which tied her for seventh overall.

Beck was named the Peach Belt Conference Co-Women’s Golfer of the Week following the tournament. Beck’s top-10 finish was her third of the year and lowered her stroke average to 79.6, which is the ninth lowest mark in the Peach Belt Conference.

Beck previously won the Montevallo Intercollegiate and had another top 10 at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate. Beck became the first Montevallo golfer to be named Peach Belt Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week since Emily Gibson in 2010.

Sophomore Tracey Marshall placed second in the Coastal Georgia Invitational for the Falcons and 15th overall with a score of 169. Freshman Megan Clyne finished third for the Falcons and 18th overall with a score of 173. Sophomore Hilary Shaner came in fourth and 25th overall with a score of 178.

Rounding out the Falcons’ scoring five was senior Emma Breen, who finished tied for 36th overall with a score of 185. Sophomore Kira Chaudhry, a Shelby County High School graduate, played as an individual and finished tied for 26th overall with a score of 179.

Shorter University won the tournament with a score of 666, while host Coastal Georgia finished second at 671. The Falcons finished ahead of Peach Belt Conference foe North Georgia, which placed fifth, and future conference member Young Harris College, which placed seventh.

The Falcons will return to action Monday, Feb. 20 as they take part in the Ann Rhoads Invitational in Birmingham.
