Montevallo tops Tuskegee in tennis match

The University of Montevallo women’s tennis team continued its strong start to the season with a 6-3 victory over Tuskegee University on the road Feb. 15.

Freshman Niki Polcerova, junior Lauren Blair and senior Helene Nordgreen all went 2-0 on the day, winning both their doubles’ and singles’ matches.

Polcerova and Nordgreen opened the match with a perfect 8-0 victory in the No. 1 doubles’ match. Blair then teamed up with freshman Kiana Banks to win the No. 3 doubles’ match 8-2. The No. 2 doubles’ match had to go to a tiebreaker, where Tuskegee won 9-8.

Polcerova continued her dominance in the No. 1 singles’ match, winning 6-0, 6-1. Blair took home the No. 2 singles’ match despite having to go to a tiebreaker at the end of the first set, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Nordgreen clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 singles’ match and freshman Meagan Stevens, a Hope Christian School graduate, coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 5 singles’ match.

Sophomore Yulia Shvetsova had the most exciting match of the day with both sets going to tiebreaker as she fell, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6).

The Falcons will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 18 as they travel to the University of Alabama in Huntsville for a 1 p.m. start.
