Mize claims Calera’s first wrestling title

Calera High School senior Coby Mize claimed the school’s first Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 4A-1A individual state wrestling championship in school history Feb. 18 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Mize defeated three opponents on his way to the AHSAA Class 4A-1A 160-pound individual state championship.

Mize claimed the state title after pinning Kory Spivey of Holtville High School in 2:39 in the 160-pound championship match.

Mize earning his way into the championship match after pinning Alan Santana of Cleburne County in 4:43 in his 160-pound semifinal match.

Mize pinned Stevie Jones of American Christian in 1:03 in his 160-pound quarterfinal match.

Mize was one of two Calera wrestlers to qualify for the AHSAA Class 4A-1A state tournament.

Teammate Danny Diaz pinned Hunter Smith of J.B. Pennington in 5:13 in his 220-pound quarterfinal match before dropping his final two matches in the state tournament.
