Spain Park tops Briarwood Christian in baseball opener

The Spain Park High School baseball team defeated Briarwood Christian School 14-2 in the season-opening game for both teams Feb. 20 at the Lions’ fifth-annual Jay D. Kynerd Memorial tournament.

Josh Close, Brandon Bilek and Dustin Cowart led the Jaguars (1-0) at the plate with two hits each.

Close finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and drove in a pair of runs. Bilek finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI while scoring three runs. Cowart went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Colton Freeman finished with a double and drove in three runs. Paul Angel and Brandon Marley added one hit each.

Hunter Hall earned the win on the mound after giving up just two eared runs on two hits in four innings with three strikeouts and three walks.

Max Goldsmith struck out two batters in one inning in relief.

Tanner Cunningham and Ben Craft led Briarwood Christian (0-1) at the plate with a single each. Craft and Matthew Furuto drove in one run each.

Cameron Adams took the loss on the mound after giving up seven runs, including two earned runs, on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 3 1/3 innings.

Spain Park will face Walker in the second day of the tournament Feb. 21 at 3:30 p.m. Briarwood Christian will host West Point at 6 p.m.
