Carol Hill, chairperson of the Shelby County Board of Registrars, is making it her mission to get Shelby County citizens registered to vote.

The board even visits local high schools to register 18-year-olds or those who will turn 18 before election time. Because of the board’s efforts, 629 students have been registered to vote since Jan. 10.

Once those students turn 18, they will be active voters and ready to go.

For the rest of us, unfortunately, Hill and her cohorts on the Board of Registrars don’t have the time to come and seek us out at our workplaces or at our homes.

However, they shouldn’t have to. Everyone in Shelby County over the age of 18 should be registered to vote.

If you’re one of those not registered to vote, we encourage you to visit Shelbyal.com, fill out the voter registration form, print it, sign it and get it to the Board of Registrars. You do not have to re-register before every election.

If you’re interested in voting in this year’s primary election, you don’t have a lot of time to get registered. The primary elections are March 13, and you must be registered 10 days in advance, so you’re looking at a March 2 deadline.

Even if you won’t vote in the primary, we encourage you to go ahead and get registered now for the general election.

This year, we’re electing a president to take us through the uncertainty ahead in the next four years, and your voice deserves to be heard through your vote.
