Thompson splits doubleheader on opening day

The Thompson High School baseball team split a doubleheader with Auburn and Opelika on opening day Feb. 20.

The Warriors dropped their first game against Auburn, 6-3.

Davis Cox led Thompson at the plate as he finishes 2-for-2 with a pair of singles. Houston Davenport finished with a double and drove in one run. Jake Bywalski added a single.

Aron McRee started on the mound and allowed three runs, including two earned runs, on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk in four innings. Peyton Johnson gave up three unearned runs on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in two innings in relief.

Thompson defeated Opelika 16-6 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Tyler Gamble led Thompson at the plate as he finished 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Andrew Smith finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Houston Davenport finished 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Josh O’Shields went 2-for-5 with a double and drove in three runs. Dee Tolbert went 1-for-3 and scored three runs.

Austin Sapp gave up three earned runs on two hits with five strikeouts and five walks in two innings on the mound.

Jake Walters allowed two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and five walks in three innings. Kenny Nabors struck out one batter in one inning in relief.
