Chelsea tops Calera

After a tough loss on Tuesday night, the Chelsea High School baseball team rebounded to defeat cross-county rival Calera 8-2 in high school baseball action Feb. 22.

The Hornets (2-1) got on the scoreboard early, scoring a run in the first inning. Chelsea added five runs in the fourth inning and another run in the sixth inning.

The Hornets were led by senior Eli Bashour, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles.

Davis Shoemaker went 1-for-3 with a double. Keelan Gregg, Brody Holder, Tripp Hobbs and Austin Dean added one hit each.

As good as the Hornets offense was, the story of the night was junior lefty Tripp Hobbs.

Hobbs sat down 15 consecutive batters and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Calera’s Lance Green broke up the no-hitter with a bunt single to lead off the sixth inning.

To lead off the seventh inning, Keith Dowell reached base on an error and later scored on a double by J.R. Seay. Seay later scored on another Chelsea error.

Hobbs closed out the seventh inning to record a complete-game two hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Jordan Sizemore took the loss after giving up three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts in three innings.

Josh Wood gave up two earned runs and walked two batters in 1/3 of an inning. Jacob Danley allowed two earned runs on three hits with a strikeout and two walks in 2 2/3 innings in relief.
