FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team is ranked No. 22 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches’ NCAA Division II men’s basketball poll.

The Falcons (24-7) are the only Peach Belt Conference team in the top 25, and are one of just two Southeast Region teams ranked in the poll. Southeast Region foe Anderson University sits at No. 14 in the rankings.

The Falcons recently secured the top seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournament and will host seven of the top programs in the Southeast Region at Montevallo this weekend.

The region tournament field features Anderson University, as well as Lincoln Memorial, which spent a number of weeks this season ranked No. 1 in the country. Also in the field are two Peach Belt Conference foes, USC-Aiken and Columbus State University. USC-Aiken spent time ranked in the top 25 this season as well. The final three teams in the tournament are Wingate University, King College and Barton College.

Montevallo was ranked as high as No. 5 last season. The Falcons’ highest ever ranking was No. 1, which has happened six times. All six of the Falcons’ No. 1 rankings came during the 2005-2006 season.

Montevallo will take on Barton College on Saturday, March 10 in the Southeast Region tournament quarterfinals. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside BankTrust Arena.
