Lightning top rival Eagles in season opening doubleheader

The Evangel Christian School baseball team opened its season March 6 with a doubleheader sweep of Alabama Christian Sports Conference rival Hope Christian School.

The Lightning (2-0) won the first game 11-0 before topping the Eagles 9-7 in the nightcap.

Brentley Wells had three hits and drove in three runs to pace Evangel Christian in the Lightning’s 11-0 win in the first game.

Daniel Ellis and Josh Letson added two hits each, while Andrew Thompson and Colton Kimbrel drove in two runs each.

Brandon Mackey and Letson combined for a four-hit shutout in the win.

Kaleb Arnold led Hope Christian (0-4) with two hits, including a double.

Chandler Donegan and Douglas Skinner added one hit each.

Matthew Hyde took the loss after giving up nine runs, including two earned runs, on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks in three innings. Skinner allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout in one inning.

Koty Watts led Evangel Christian with two hits in a 9-7 win in the nightcap. Watts also drove in three runs.

Zac Shackelford drove in the game-winning run in the sixth inning for the Lightning.

Hahn Hahn Lau got the win on the mound. Jacob Albright earned a save.

Andrew Martin had two hits and drove in a run for Hope Christian.

Skinner and Hyde had one hit each. Arnold scored three runs, while Caleb Key scored two runs.

Skinner gave up three earned runs on three his with three strikeouts and three walks in three innings.

Arnold allowed three unearned runs on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks in 1 2/3 innings. Dillon Thompson gave up three unearned runs on one hit with a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.
