Screaming Eagles drop Falcons in non-conference game

The University of Montevallo baseball team fell at home to the Screaming Eagles of the University of Southern Indiana 12-4 in a non-conference game March 7.

Montevallo (11-10) was led by freshman Vinny Rodriguez, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, an RBI and a walk.

Senior Heath Peterson, sophomore Will Fulmer and senior Kirk Waligora all went 2-for-5 at the plate. Peterson added an RBI and a run scored, while Fulmer had a double.

Junior Vincente Andrews was 1-for-4 with a solo homerun, while junior Andrew Hill, a Pelham High School graduate, drove in a run.

On the mound, junior Devon Davis got the start and picked up his first loss of the season as he went 4 1/3 innings with three walks and three runs given up. His record fell to 2-1 on the season.

Montevallo sent six pitchers to the mound throughout the game. Only senior Wes Rich, a Pelham High School graduate, and sophomore Edward Brandsema held the Screaming Eagles scoreless in their respective stints on the mound.

Southern Indiana scored a single run in the first inning, but Montevallo answered with a run in the second as Rodriguez hit an RBI double to right field to score senior Chris Ross, a Pelham High School graduate. The Screaming Eagles took the lead for good in the fifth inning as they scored a pair of runs.

Southern Indiana tacked on six more in the sixth inning, but the Falcons tried to mount a comeback in the bottom half as they scored two runs. Andrews led off the inning with a solo homerun and then Peterson hit an RBI single up the middle to score junior Austin Dubberly, a Pelham High School graduate.

The Screaming Eagles added three more runs in the seventh inning to take a 12-3 lead. The Falcons’ final run came in the eighth inning as Hill drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, March 10 at noon as they travel to Flagler College for a three-game series in Peach Belt Conference action.
