The Shelby County High School softball team took an early lead and coasted to a 10-4 victory over Montevallo in high school softball action March 12.

Shelby County, which improved to 10-0 on the season with the win, pounced on Montevallo for three runs in the top of the first inning, getting consecutive hits from Brittany Lansford, Brianna Buie and Kaitlyn Paschall.

The Lady Bulldogs would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning, when Mallory Anderson walked and scored on a double by Kaley Kornegay.

Following a quiet second inning, the Lady Wildcats exploded for five more runs, getting base hits from Lansford, Buie, Courtney Shields, Victoria Adams and Ashlyn Blackerby.

After adding single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to take a 10-2 lead, Shelby County saw Montevallo make a late run in the bottom of the seventh, as sisters McKenna and Mallory Anderson crossed the plate after doubles by Kornegay and Dockery and a two-out single from Meredith Goggins.

It was too little, too late, however, as pitcher Jessica Carden held off the Lady Bulldogs to take the win. Carden picked up the complete game victory, striking out five and walking three.

Kornegay took the loss for Montevallo, going six innings with three strikeouts and three walks.

Kornegay led the Lady Bulldogs at the plate as well, going 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, while McKenna Anderson added two hits and a stolen base.

Shields, Lansford, Buie, Adams, and Blackerby each had a pair of hits for the Lady Wildcats.
