Hornets top Tallassee in tournament opener

The Chelsea High School baseball team defeated Tallassee 10-7 in its opening game of the Lake Martin Classic in Alexander City on March 19.

The Hornets jumped out to an early lead after scoring six runs in the top of the first inning.

Tallassee scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 7-7 before Chelsea clinched the victory with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Davis Shoemaker led the Hornets at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a triple. Shoemaker drove in three runs in the victory.

Matthew Graben finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a double and drove in one run. Tripp Hobbs finished 2-for-5 at the plate with a double and drove in one run.

Austin Dean, Alex Dean, Brody Holder and Joey Mock added one hit each in the victory.

Hobbs earned the win on the mound after giving up just one hit with a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings in relief.

Mock started on the mound and gave up four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Alex Dean gave up three runs on three hits with two walks in 1/3 of an inning in relief.
