A Maylene man is being held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $107,000 after police said he was involved in a string of car burglaries in Alabaster’s Cedar Grove subdivision.

Alabaster police arrested 47-year-old Mark Randall Johnson on March 12 and charged him with five counts of unlawfully breaking and entering a vehicle and four counts of theft of property.

Alabaster Deputy Police Chief Curtis Rigney said the arrest came after police received a call reporting a “suspicious person” in the neighborhood, which is off Shelby County 17.

After police approached Johnson, he ran from officers before he was apprehended in a wooded area, Rigney said.

Rigney said officers discovered stolen property in the suspect’s possession.

Police reports listed more than $1,400 worth of property stolen from vehicles parked in the neighborhood, including a Nikon camera, a nylon tool bag with tools and a pair of $170 sunglasses.
