It’s raining cats and dogs at the Shelby Humane Society.

For the month of April, the Shelby Humane Society will cut adoption rates in half when there is rain in the forecast.

The regular adoption fee for animals less than 6 months of age is $80. For animals older than 6 months, the fee is $60. So if rain is in the forecast those prices would drop to $40 and $30 said Shelby Humane Society Executive Director Jenny Wilson.

“If you look at the weather, they actually have rain forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday of this week,” Wilson said.

Wilson said the Humane Society organized the event in part because the spring is prime breeding time for cats and dogs. The animal intake at the Humane Society almost doubles, Wilson said.

“It is kitten and puppy season and we have a huge increase in animals coming into the shelter,” she said. “So this allows us to get them out of our facility more quickly.”

Wilson said this is the first raining cats and dogs event the Humane Society has had and hopes it will provide new homes for many homeless animals.

“This is our first year to do it and we hope it will be successful and result in an increase in adoptions,” Wilson said. “It costs us $15 per day to house and treat animals in our facility,” Wilson said. “Adoption is better for them (the animals) mentally and emotionally and it’s better for us financially.”
