Bulldogs sweep Hale County in doubleheader

The Montevallo High School baseball team swept Hale County to clinch the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 3A, Area 7 regular season title following a doubleheader April 5.

“We’ve got a great group of kids,” said Montevallo coach Trey Simpson. “They’ve gone above and beyond.”

The Bulldogs (21-4 overall, 5-0 in Class 3A, Area 7) defeated Hale County 14-3 in the opener.

Chase Hamrick led Montevallo offensively as he finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles. Hamrick drove in two runs and scored two runs in the victory.

Taylor Burr, who drove in four runs and scored one run, finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.

Burr also earned the win on the mound after giving up three runs, including two earned runs, on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in a five-inning complete-game victory.

Montevallo topped Hale County 11-2 in the nightcap.

Zach Smith led the Bulldogs offensively as he finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles. Smith drove in four runs in the victory.

Simpson said his team isn’t satisfied with the area championship.
