Warriors finish runner-up in section tournament

The Thompson High School girls’ tennis team captured a pair of individual titles on its way to a runner-up finish at an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A section tournament April 16 at the Pelham Tennis Center.

The Warriors finished with 43 points in the tournament, which placed Thompson 10 points behind section winner Northridge.

Pelham finished fourth in the team standings with 14 points.

Erin Hutter of Thompson claimed the No. 2 singles’ championship after defeating Kathleen Kennedy of Northridge 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match.

Hutter teamed up with Maria Siow of Thompson to claim the No. 1 doubles’ title after the pair defeated Katie Kema and Sidney Garner of Pelham 6-3, 6-3 in the championship match.

The Warriors also featured several runner-up finishes.

Laura Harwell of Thompson finished runner-up in the No. 1 singles’ bracket after dropping the championship match to Mary Caitlyn Wilhite of Northridge 6-4, 6-4.

Siow finished runner-up in the No. 4 singles’ bracket after dropping the championship match to Julie Kim of Northridge 6-2, 6-2.

Olivia Sorrell of Thompson finished runner-up in the No. 5 singles’ bracket after dropping the championship match to Logan Anderson of Northridge 6-3, 6-4.

Anna Conn of Thompson finished runner-up in the No. 6 singles’ bracket after dropping the championship match to Maani Kamal of Northridge 6-2, 6-0.

Harwell and Victoria Killingsworth of Thompson finished runner-up in the No. 2 doubles’ bracket after dropping the championship match to Wilhite and Kamal 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Sorrell and Conn finished runner-up in the No. 3 doubles’ bracket after dropping the championship match to Anderson and Kennedy 6-2, 6-0.

Katie Kema of Pelham claimed the No. 3 singles’ championship after defeating Anna Laura Killian of Northridge 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the title match.

Kema and Sidney Garner finished runner-up in the No. 1 doubles’ bracket.
