Panthers edge rival Warriors in extra innings

Pelham High School junior Whitney Gillespie drove in teammate Kristian Foster with her RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Panthers to a 2-1 walk-off win over rival Thompson in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A, Area 10 contest April 19.

Gillespie led the Panthers as she finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Gillespie drove in one run and scored one run in the victory.

Foster finished 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run.

Gillespie earned the win in the circle after recording two strikeouts without giving up a hit or a run in one inning in relief.

Emily Spain started and allowed one earned run on five hits with one strikeout and three walks in seven innings.

Haley Crumpton led Thompson offensively as she finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Crumpton also scored one run.

Rachel Rigney took the loss after allowing two runs, including one earned run, on seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in a complete-game effort.
