The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received an arrest warrant for Calera resident Twnica Newton, 32, on April 20. She surrendered herself at the sheriff’s office, where she was arrested. She was released on a $15,000 bond, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

In early February, the sheriff’s office received a complaint from an inmate alleging misconduct of a corrections officer, according to the release. Correctional administrators and sheriff’s investigators began an investigation and allegedly discovered that the corrections officer had violated established policies and procedures, according to the press release. Newton submitted her resignation on Feb. 15 after being questioned about the complaint. Newton was a corrections officer for seven years.

Sheriff Chris Curry requested that the Alabama Bureau of Investigation review the matter for possible criminal violations. That investigation was completed and resulted in the warrant.
