Lions sweep McAdory in playoff series

The Briarwood Christian School baseball team swept McAdory in the first round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A playoffs April 20.

The Lions defeated McAdory 9-3 in the opening game.

Daniel Robert led Briarwood Christian offensively as he finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer. Robert drove in two runs and scored two runs in the victory.

Matthew Furuto finished 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Ethan Simmons went 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs. Tanner Cunningham, who drove in one run and scored one run, finished 1-for-3 at the plate. Cleveland Milstead finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and drove in two runs. Brayden Housel finished 1-for-1 at the plate and scored one run.

Kevin McKelvey scored two runs in the victory. Carter Tyra and Cole Pearson scored one run each.

Cameron Adams earned the win on the mound after allowing three runs, including two earned runs, on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks in a complete-game victory.

Briarwood Christian defeated McAdory 8-1.

Craft led the Lions offensively as he finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Craft drove in two runs in the victory.

Pearson, who drove in one run and scored one run, finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Furuto went 1-for-4 at the plate and drove in one run. Housel finished 1-for-1 at the plate and scored one run.

Cunningham, Tyra, Robert, McKelvey and Jake Bracewell scored one run each.

Barnes Bankston allowed just one unearned run on five hits with six strikeouts in a complete-game victory.

Briarwood Christian (26-6) will host Hueytown in the second round of the AHSAA Class 5A playoffs April 27-28. The two teams will meet in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on April 27, with the if-necessary game scheduled for April 28 at 3 p.m.
