Lions finish runner-up in section track and field meet

The Briarwood Christian School girls’ track and field team finished runner-up in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A section track and field meet April 28 in Smiths Station.

Elizabeth Cowen led the Lions as she claimed the girls’ 30-meter hurdles title with a time of 38.60 seconds. Cowen also finished third in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles with her time of 17.34 seconds.

The Lions’ 3,200-meter relay team won the event with a time of 10:31.89.

Becky Thielman came in second in the girls’ 1,600-meter run with her time of 5:49.19.

Kimberly Galloway came in fourth in the girls’ 1,600-meter run with her time of 5:55.73. Galloway came in second in the girls’ 3,200-meter run with her time of 12:53.03.

Abbie Cutcliffe finished fourth in the girls’ 100-meter dash with her time of 12.85 seconds.

Melissa Mathews finished third in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles event with her time of 48.57 seconds. Mathews also finished second in the girls’ triple jump with her leap of 34 feet, 2.5 inches.

Erin Grubb finished second in the girls’ long jump competition with her time of 17 feet, 2.5 inches.

The Lions’ entry in the girls’ 400-meter relay team finished third with a time of 50.18 seconds. Briarwood Christian’s entry in the girls’ 1,600-meter relay event finished second with a time of 4:18.95.

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ track and field team finished fourth in the boys’ team standings at the Class 5A section meet.

Kalan Reed led the Lions as he captured the boys’ 110-meter hurdles event with his time of 14.48 seconds.

Will Edwards won the javelin event with his toss of 173 feet, 4 inches. Sam Whorton claimed the pole vault competition with his leap of 12 feet, 6 inches.

Matthew Caldwell finished second in the pole vault competition with his leap of 12 feet. Robert Price came in fourth in the boys’ 800-meter run with his time of 2:09.54. Trey Long finished fourth in the boys’ 3,200-meter run with his time of 11:24.43.

The Lions’ 1,600-meter relay team finished third with a time of 3:34.31.

Chelsea High School finished 12th in team standings in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A section meet April 28 in Tuscaloosa.

Darrell Foster led the Hornets as he finished fourth in the boys’ shut put event with his toss of 45 feet, 2.5 inches.

The Chelsea girls’ team came in 14th in the girls’ team standings at the Class 5A section meet.

Katlyn Coley led the Hornets as she finished fourth in the girls’ 800-meter run with her time of 2:38.79.

Shelby County High School boys’ and girls’ track and field athletes competed as individuals in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A section meet April 28 in Smiths Station.

Clint Cox led the Shelby County boys’ contingent after finishing 10th in the 1,600-meter run with his time of 5:35.36.

Victoria Cox led the Shelby County girls’ team after finishing 12th in both the 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run. Cox finished with a time of 3:05.85 in the 800-meter run, while posting a time of 6:55.75 in the 1,600-meter run.
