Spain Park claims section title

The Spain Park High School boys’ golf team claimed an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A section tournament championship May 1 at Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa.

The Jaguars carded a team score of 288 in the tournament, which edged second-place Hoover by seven strokes.

Spain Park qualified for a Class 6A sub-state tournament May 8 at the Country Club of Birmingham following the section tournament title.

Connor Smith led the Jaguars with his 2-under par 70, which placed him in a two-way tie for second overall in individual standings.

Vasili Kartos carded a 1-under par 71, which placed him fourth overall in individual standings.

Daniel Schroder finished with a 1-over par 73, while Patrick Martin fired a 2-over par 77.

Robby Prater, a past AHSAA Class 6A individual state champion, rounded out the group of Spain Park golfers with his 5-over par 77.

Matt McGuffie of Spain Park, playing as an individual, carded a 9-over par 81. Thomas Laney of Spain Park finished with a round of 86 playing as an individual.

Oak Mountain finished sixth in the team standings at the section tournament after carding a team score of 315 strokes.

Clay Nolen, who led the Eagles with a 1-over par 73, qualified for the sub-state tournament as an individual.

Tyler Edge carded a 6-over par 79. Guice Potter fired a 9-over par 81, while Riley Fowler finished with a 10-over par 82. Dawson Moody rounded out the Oak Mountain golfers with his round of 86.

Pelham finished 11th in the team standings in the section tournament after carding a team score of 333 strokes.

Joshua Shaw led the Panthers with his 5-over par 78 in the tournament.

Connor Slane carded a 8-over par 80, while Justin Nolen finished with a round of 86. Nils Abel rounded out the group of Pelham golfers after shooting a 89.
