Current members of the Alabaster City Council will interview four candidates during its May 17 work session to fill the remaining term recently vacated by former Ward 3 Councilman Adam Moseley.

Moseley stepped down from the council in March after he was appointed to be a member of the city’s first school board. The current members of the City Council will now appoint a new council member to serve the remainder of Moseley’s term, which will expire in November 2012.

After accepting applications for the council seat over the past several weeks, the council members will begin interviewing the four candidates at 6:30 p.m. on May 17 at the Alabaster Senior Center.

In order to be eligible for the position, a candidate must live in Ward 3 and be a registered voter.

The candidates are Les Zemnes, a branch manager with Enterprise Holdings, Suzanne Clemons, a math teacher at Thompson High School, Scott Long, the owner of E21 Realty and the Property Management Group Birmingham, and Stacy Rakestraw, the children’s director at Evangel Presbyterian Church and an employee at Judy’s Plantscapes.

In addition to the four candidates, City Council members could nominate other candidates before voting on the appointment, said Alabaster City Administrator George Henry.

In other business during its May 7 meeting, the council:

-Reappointed Moseley to serve on the Alabaster Board of Education until June 2017. The school board members were appointed in March to serve staggered terms, which expire in June of each year.

Moseley’s term originally was scheduled to expire next month.

“Adam was appointed in March. That’s why this (appointment) has popped up so quickly,” said Ward 6 Councilman Scott Brakefield. “It will be the duty of future councils to go through the application process in April and appoint in May.”

-Voted unanimously to elect Councilman Rick Walters as council president pro-tem. Walters will serve as council president in the absence of Council President Jim McClain.

Moseley previously was the council president pro-tem.
