Falcons add three women’s basketball signees

University of Montevallo women’s basketball head coach Cindy Hilbrich has announced the addition of three recruits for the 2012-2013 season.

Washeeta “Shay” Bonner, Alexsis Brown and Katie Colson will each join the Falcons in the fall.

Bonner is a 5-foot-8 guard from Starkville, Miss. who will join the Falcons as a junior after two years at Itawamba Community College.

While at ICC, Bonner helped lead the team to the 2012 State Championship and was named to the All-Region Team. She averaged 9.2 points per game, 2.4 assists per game and 2.1 steals per game. She scored a career high 20 points against Lawson State and had a double-double against Shelton State with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Bonner prepped at Starkville High School, where she was named both Team Most Valuable Player as well as the Defensive Most Valuable Player. She averaged 13.5 points per game as a senior as well as five rebounds per game. Bonner plans to continue majoring in sociology at Montevallo.

Brown is a 5-8 guard from Homewood who comes to Montevallo after two seasons at Shelton State Community College and will join the Falcons as a junior. While at SSCC, the Bucs won the Region 22 Tournament Championship and Brown was named First Team All-ACCC and First Team All-Region. She averaged 11.3 points per game and shot 46.4 percent from the field this past season. She scored 645 points in just two seasons at Shelton.

Brown prepped at Homewood High School, where she was a two-time First Team All-State selection. She ended her career as the leading scorer at Homewood after averaging 25 points per game as a senior. She was named the Most Valuable Player at the Area Tournament.

Colson is a 5-9 forward from Madison will join the Falcons as a freshman. Colson prepped at Bob Jones High School, where she helped lead the Lady Patriots to the 2009 and 2011 State Championship. She was also a part of the 2010 and 2012 State Championship Runner-Up teams. She was named to the Area All-Tournament Team in 2012 and the Huntsville Times Classic All-Tournament Team in 2011. She averaged six points, eight rebounds and three assists per game at Bob Jones while scoring a career high 19 points and grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds.

In her four years at Bob Jones, Colson’s teams had a combined record of 138 wins and just 15 losses. She also plays travel basketball for Alabama Elite where she averaged eight points and six rebounds per game. She shot just over 55 percent from the field with AE. She carries a 5.0 GPA on a 6.0 weighted scale and scored a near-perfect 34 on the ACT. She plans on majoring in chemistry while at Montevallo.

With the addition of Bonner, Brown and Colson coach Hilbrich now has seven new recruits signed to join the Falcons this Fall and she plans on signing one more in the upcoming weeks.
