Jaguars headed to state tournament

The Spain Park High School boys’ golf team qualified for the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A state tournament following a sub-state tournament May 8 at the Birmingham Country Club.

The Jaguars carded a team score of 289 strokes, which placed Spain Park four strokes back of tournament winner Hoover. Spain Park will compete in the AHSAA Class 6A state tournament May 14-15 at the Robert Trent Jones’ Grand National course in Opelika.

Robby Prater led the Jaguars with his 3-under par 69, which placed him third in individual standings in the Class 6A sub-state tournament.

Connor Smith finished with a 1-under par 71, while Patrick Martin carded an even par 72.

Vasili Kartos shot a 77 and Daniel Schroder rounded out the group of Spain Park golfers with his round of 78.

Oak Mountain High School golfer Clay Nolen, who qualified for the sub-state tournament as an individual, carded a 3-over par 75 in the tournament.
