Montevallo adds volleyball signee

University of Montevallo women’s volleyball head coach Katie O’Brien announced the addition of Briana Marquez to the Falcons’ 2012 signing class.

With the addition of Marquez, O’Brien now has five recruits signed for the upcoming season.

Marquez will be joining the Falcons as a freshman from Channahon, Ill. Marquez is a 5-9 setter who prepped at Minooka Community High School. She also competes on the club level for UNO Volleyball on the 18 Elite squad.

Marquez’s club team recently swept the Northeast Qualifier and will be competing at Nationals in Columbus, Ohio June 27-July 1. This past high school season, she ranked 13th among setters in Illinois with 639 assists, good for 8.6 per game. She had 77 kills, 52 service aces, 56 digs and 29 solo blocks. Her team was 29-5 and a perfect 14-0 in conference.

Marquez was named All-Southwestern Prairie Conference as well as All-Area by the Herald News. As a junior her team was 13-1 in conference and advanced all the way to the Sweet Sixteen in postseason action. She led the conference with 851 assists and was named Honorable Mention All-Area.

As a freshman and sophomore, Marquez was the varsity starting setter and served as the team captain. She was an honor roll student her freshman, junior and senior years as well.
