A 17-year-old was airlifted and four others were transported to the hospital after a wreck on U.S. 31 in Pelham on June 22.

Pelham police officers and firefighters responded to the wreck, which occurred in front of Cahaba Family Medicine, at about 9:50 p.m. According to police, the wreck happened when the driver of a Nissan Maxima traveling northbound on U.S. 31 lost control and crossed the median into the southbound lanes.

The Maxima then overturned, struck a Honda Civic traveling southbound and then came to rest on its right side, according to police.

After emergency personnel arrived on the scene, they cut a 17-year-old passenger out of the Maxima and airlifted him to UAB Hospital for treatment. Three other juvenile passengers in the Maxima were transported by ambulance to UAB Hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Two passengers from the Maxima still are listed in critical condition at UAB Hospital, according to police. Because all of the Maxima’s occupants were juveniles, their names will not be released, police said.

The driver of the Honda Civic was transported by a family member to Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster “to be checked out,” according to Pelham police.

As of June 25, the wreck was still being investigated by the Pelham Police Department’s Traffic Operations Unit.
