PELHAM – Two rising sophomores at Pelham High School have been selected to represent the state in a regional baseball tournament in Georgia.

After an impressive showing at the annual Alabama Baseball Coaches Association showcase, Hunter Stovall and Panther teammate Sam Finnerty have earned a spot on the Team Alabama Class of 2015 baseball roster.

Stovall said that the showcase in Troy was a great opportunity to impress scouts and show what he has accomplished so far.

“There were coaches from junior colleges, universities and pro scouts from all over the country,” he said. “I feel that I was selected by showing the best that I could up to this point.”

The two day tournament in Georgia consists of two games, workouts and batting practice in front of scouts from colleges across the country and the MLB. Stovall said expects to play at the catcher position while Finnerty will most likely be on the mound.

Finnerty said that he is excited for the chance to represent his state while at the same time building his individual baseball resume.

“It’s a great opportunity for me and everyone else that’s in it,” he said. “This is mainly just a starting point for me.”

Both players said that they are looking to improve their game from a mentality standpoint.

“I hope to improve on my leadership and just going out there and playing the best game of baseball I can,” Stovall said.

Finnerty said that remaining mentally tough in front of scouts will be the key for him.

“The biggest thing is playing in front of scouts and playing relaxed,” he said. “I think this is a big deal and I will carry it with me for the rest of my life.”
