Dalta Danielle Garrett, age 20, the fourth daughter of Bill and Vivian Garrett of Pelham, went home to be with the Lord Jesus her savior on July 3, 2012. She was named after her parents’ spiritual heritage, Dalta Eads Morris and Dan Hackenberg.

Garrett was a student at Auburn University and had just finished her second year studying Industrial engineering. She was a Scholarship USAF ROTC cadet, who had just finished field training, graduating in the top 20 percent of her class as a Superior Performer and was going to be an officer in the USAF. She was a young woman with beauty and brawn. As the reigning push-up queen of the Garrett family, she always carried herself with strength and dignity. It was not unusual for her to stop what she was doing and carry someone else across the finish line-literally and figuratively. Her big brown eyes and smile were unforgettable. She was Salutatorian of Hope Christian School and president of her senior class. During high school, she was a National Beta Club Scholar, President of Teen Eagle, President of Christian Honor Society, Hope Christian School’s representative to Girls State and The Lefkovitz 4-H Citizenship Award Recipient. She was a finalist in the Shelby County Junior Miss scholarship program in 2009, coming in the top five in fitness and talent while also winning the essay contest, “Being Your Best Self.” Dalta had a great love for the Alabama 4-H program and eventually became the president of the Alabama State 4-H Council during the Centennial Celebration year of Alabama 4-H. She spoke on 4-H’s behalf throughout the state. She was the 4-H State winner in Persuasive and Informative Public Speaking, Electric Energy Demonstration and Wildlife Competition. She was always disciplined and hard working from her days as a child. Many of her early years were spent competing in high-level gymnastics. She won 96 gymnastic medals before the age of 15 and was part of the level 6 State Championship Gymnastic Team. While attending Auburn’s gymnastic camp, she was awarded the top gymnast award. But the most important thing in Garrett’s life was her relationship with Jesus Christ. She showed His love to friends and family with little kindnesses every day. She often counseled with others and wrote notes of support. She was a truth teller who never shied away from telling others of God’s good work.

She is survived by her parents, Bill and Vivian, and her four sisters, Joan, Ruth, Deborah and Sabrina. The funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Pelham. Burial will follow in Helena City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her fellow AF cadets and closest friends. Monetary gifts will go toward burial expense, but any remainder will be donated to Auburn AFROTC in Dalta’s memory. Arrangements by Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Pelham.
