Shelby County standouts lead team to victory in girls’ all-star soccer contest

Spain Park High School rising senior Simone Charley and Briarwood Christian School rising senior Sara Smeltzer led the North squad with a hat trick each in their team’s 6-0 win over the South in the girls’ soccer all-star contest July 10 at the YMCA Folmar Field in Montgomery in the Alabama High School Athletic Association All-Star Sports Week.

Smeltzer also finished with one assist in the North team’s victory. Spain Park High School rising senior Grace Connolly and Thompson High School rising senior Michaela Graber also saw time for the North squad in the all-star game.

Charley gave the North team a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of the contest with her goal assisted by Smeltzer. Charley added her second goal in the 46th minute, which gave the North a 2-0 lead.

Smeltzer scored her first goal, unassisted, in the 51st minute of the match. Smeltzer followed with another goal in the 62nd minute.

Charley capped her night with an unassisted goal in the 67th minute of the contest. Smeltzer netted her final goal just more than one minute later, which capped the scoring for the North team.

The North team was coached by Thompson High School coach Nathan Button.
