Representatives from the Alabaster Board of Education are set to meet with representatives from the Shelby County Board of Education after Labor Day, Alabaster BOE members said during an Aug. 13 meeting.

During the meeting, outgoing Jefferson County Board of Education Superintendent Dr. Phillip Hammonds, who has been hired to serve as the Alabaster BOE’s coordinator of administrative services, said negotiation meetings with the SCBOE are set to begin in a few weeks.

“We will have the first meeting with representatives from both sides in about three or four weeks,” said Alabaster BOE member Adam Moseley.

Moseley said waiting to begin meetings until after Labor Day will give the county’s schools a chance to settle into the new school year before the negotiations begin. Shelby County’s schools will begin classes on Aug. 20.

During a recent Alabaster BOE work session, Hammonds said he has started communicating with SCBOE Superintendent Randy Fuller, and said he was working to get an analysis from Alabaster BOE financial consultant Dave Smith before negotiations begin.

Hammonds previously said it is “within the realm of possibility” for most of the negotiations with the SCBOE to be completed as early as January or February 2013.

Alabaster School Board members have not yet finalized its split date with Shelby County Schools.

Hammonds currently is the full-time superintendent of the Jefferson County School System, but is serving as an advisor to the Alabaster Board of Education during his off and personal days and on nights and weekends, he said.

Hammonds said the Jefferson County Board of Education is set to hire his replacement as early as October. Before he was hired by the Alabaster School Board, he had already announced he planned to retire from the Jefferson County School System in early 2013.
