The University of Montevallo men’s soccer team defeated the University of Mobile 2-1 in its final exhibition match at an on-campus practice field Aug. 21.

Junior defender Gary O’Neill netted a rebound goal off a deflection by the Mobile goalkeeper midway through the first half to give Montevallo a 1-0 lead.

Senior midfielder Stephen Beatty fired a shot past the Mobile goalkeeper off an assist from Pierre Omanga late in the first half to push the Falcons’ lead to 2-1.

Mobile senior midfielder Stephen Okai netted a penalty-kick goal midway through the second half to cut the Montevallo lead to 2-1, but the Falcons held on down the stretch for the victory.

Montevallo coach Ken Hassler said he is pleased with his team’s progress during its three exhibition matches, which included matches against two NCAA Division I foes. The Falcons will travel to Eckerd College in their season-opening match Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.

“It’s an exciting start,” Hassler said. “I’m excited about the team’s potential.”
