Austin upsets Spain Park 37-24

DECATUR-Austin High School jumped out to a huge halftime lead and held off a late Spain Park rally 37-24 Aug. 31 at Austin High School.

Austin quarterback Chris Sparkman started the scoring with a 2 yard touchdown pass to Malique Elliot.  The extra point was missed.

Spain Park got on the board when junior kicker Thomas Taylor made a 30-yard field goal to close the gap to 6-3.

Sparkman hit Josh Walker for a 68-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 13-3

In the second quarter Austin running back Josh Walker had a 69-yard touchdown run and a 1-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 27-3

Spain Park senior quarterback Nick Mullens threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Dalton Brown and the first half ended 27-10

Mullens would hit junior receiver Jourdan Walker for a 10-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to close the gap to 27-16 after the extra point was missed.

Mullens would again find Walker for a 5-yard touchdown pass to make the score 27-24.

But Austin was too much for the Jaguars as they kicked a Philip Corlew field goal and Walker ran in another 37-yard touchdown ending the scoring at 37-24.

Spain Park finished with 376 totals yards. The Jaguars had 317 yards passing on 31-of-54 attempts, but only 59 yards rushing while Austin had 239 yards rushing and 264 yards passing for 503 total yards.
