PELHAM – The sixth annual Harvest of Hope luncheon will be held Sept. 18.

The luncheon benefits Oak Mountain Missions, a Pelham-based organization that assists families in need of assistance in Jefferson and Shelby counties. Dianne Cesario, assistant director of Oak Mountain Missions, said it is the organization’s only fundraiser, and it typically attracts about 500 people.

“It generates probably about a third of our operating (revenue),” said Dianne Cesario, assistant director of Oak Mountain Missions.

Bobby Humphrey, a former University of Alabama running back who also played for the Denver Broncos and the Miami Dolphins, will serve as the keynote speaker. Reverend Al and Passion Lewis will provide the musical entertainment, and a silent auction will also take place prior to the luncheon. Janet Hall of Fox 6 News will be the mistress of ceremonies.

“Janet has been so kind,” Cesario said. “This is her sixth year to do this.”

Cesario said Oak Mountain Missions assists families in different ways, including food or finances. The families must qualify with other social services agencies before receiving help from Oak Mountain Missions.

Cesario said the Oak Mountain Missions has seen an increase in requests for assistance in the last year, which she said was likely because of the economy.

“We have seen an increase in the number of families who are needing assistance,” she said. “So many of those who come to us have not been able to find jobs.”

The luncheon will be held Sept. 18 at 11:30 a.m. at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center. The silent auction will begin at 10 a.m.
