MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in overtime Sept. 11 at Varsity Field in a match against former Gulf South Conference rival UAH.

The loss ended an unbeaten streak that saw the Falcons get off to the best start in program history with a run of four consecutive matches without a loss.

Camilla Alderin scored the lone goal for the Falcons (3-1-1) off an assist from Julie Heltne in the 19th minute of the contest, which tied the match at 1-1 following an early UAH goal by Khadijah Jannah.

Following a scoreless second half, the Chargers netted the game-winner in overtime when a shot by Emily Hancock bounced off the post and teammate Sydnie Fiocca punched the ball past Montevallo goalkeeper Kaitlin Thomas in the fifth minute of the overtime period.

Thomas finished with four saves in the match.

The Falcons, who are ranked No. 10 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll, return to action Sept. 15 when they travel to UNC-Pembroke to face the Braves in their Peach Belt Conference opener.
