Jaguars win Spain Park Twilight Invitational

NORTH SHELBY – Nick Simmons led a pack of Spain Park runners to claim the Spain Park Twilight Invitational cross country team championship Sept. 15 at Hoover’s Veterans Park.

Simmons (17:13.36) finished second behind John Carroll Catholic’s Griffin Lee to lead Spain Park’s four top-10 finishers in the boys’ 5A-6A race. Mark Ferrell took sixth (17:31.23), Jordan Strong placed seventh (17:33.66) and Rome Fiore finished ninth (17:40.32) to total for 40 points to lead the team standings. Homewood finished second with 70 points.

Thompson’s Erika Kulp placed second in the girls’ 5A-6A race with a time of 21.28.97. Kulp’s runner-up finish led the Warriors to a third place finish in the team standings, just six points behind second place Oak Mountain.

Emily Stevens led the Eagles with a time of 21:32.36 for fourth place in the individual standings.

Indian Springs’ Victoria Saenz won the girls 1A-4A race with a time of 21:48.82. Saenz’s run led the Indian Springs team to a first place finish totaling 59 points, 14 points ahead of second-place Lamp (Loveless).

Eli Cohen of Indian Springs led Shelby County runners in the boys 1A-4A race with an eight place finish with a time of 19:30.66.
