CHELSEA – The Chelsea Lady Hornets bounced back after falling to the Thompson Warriors in the first set to win the match 21-25, 25-17, 15-13 on Oct. 2.

Chelsea rallied to tie the first set 9-9, but Thompson responded with an 8-2 rally, then closed the game on a 7-4 run to win the first set 7-4.

The Lady Hornets rebounded in the second set trailing just once, 1-0 when Taylin McCarver started things off with an ace. Chelsea broke for a 5-2 run to take a lead they didn’t relinquish. The Lady Hornets closed the second set on a 5-0 run for a 25-17 win.

“We got lax after the first set,” said Thompson head coach Kellyanne Gandy. “Our serve-receive broke down (in the second set).”

Thompson took an early 6-1 lead and appeared to be on their way to a match win. However, Chelsea was able to take advantage of nine Thompson errors including one to give the Lady Hornets the 15-13 third set victory and a 2-1 match win.

“We jumped out front and lost ball control,” said Gandy. “We showed our youth at times.”

“They (Thompson) had some unfortunate errors,” said Chelsea head coach Jamie Gill. “We took advantage and played a consistent game.”

Kelsea Bivins led the Warriors with 11 kills and four blocks. Tara Miller had 14 assists with August Newberry leading Thompson with 10 digs. Milea Ray had a team-high six blocks.

Emma Cotney led Chelsea with 11 digs while Holly Marbut added 10 digs and five kills. Madison Turner had four kills. Courtney Campbell had four aces and six digs.

Chelsea began the three-team match with a 25-22, 19-25, 5-15 loss to Clay-Chalkville. Turner had four kills, three aces and seven digs. Campbell had six assists and seven digs while Cotney led the defense with 10 digs in the loss.

Thompson topped Clay-Chalkville with an 18-25, 25-19, 15-9 win in their first match of the night.

The Warriors closed the second set on a 7-1 rally to even the match and broke away on a 7-0 run in the third set to take the match.
