Calera wins Moody tourney

MOODY-The Calera Eagles volleyball team finished first out of 12 teams at the Moody Tournament Oct. 13.  Calera won its last four matches after losing in pool play to Center Point High School.

Calera started the tournament in pool play with a 2-0 (25-22, 25-21) victory over The Altamont School 2-0 (25-22, 25-21). A’Kia Harris led the Eagles with 12 kills.

The Eagles only loss of the tournament came in their next match to Center Point 2-0 (25-15, 25-15). Caitlin Ryan led Calera with five kills and four blocks, while Harris added five kills and four blocks.

In their final pool play match, the Eagles defeated St. Clair County High School 2-1 (25-11, 20-25, 15-4).  Harris led the Eagles again with nine kills, four blocks and two aces.  Ryan added five kills and two blocks, while Grace Rodriquez chipped in four kills and two blocks.

Calera finished into second in pool play behind Center Point.  In tournament play, Calera beat Isabella High School 2-1 (25-17, 24-26, 15-9).   Harris continued her good weekend with 15 kills and five digs.  Elizabeth Rhinehart added 11 digs, while Faith Graham chipped in three aces.

In the second round, the Eagles avenged their only loss with a 2-0 (25-15, 25-11) victory over Center Point.  Harris led with eight kills, two aces and six digs. Ryan added four kills, while Aubrie Smith chipped in six digs.  Amber Sherman helped with four aces.

Calera faced host Moody High School in the championship game.  The Eagles defeated the Blue Devils 2-0 (25-15, 25-15).  Harris led the Eagles with 15 kills, three aces and three blocks, while Graham added three aces.

Harris finished with a tournament hitting percentage of .438.  Harris had a total 64 kills, seven aces, 11 blocks and 11 digs.

The Eagles will not be on the court again until they host the Area tournaments on Thursday, Oct. 18.
