Evangel blanks Wiregrass, 47-0

DOTHAN-Evangel Christian defeated Wiregrass Christian 47-0 on Oct. 19 at Wiregrass Christian.

The Lightning (7-2) were led by Andrew Thompson who was 5-of-11 passing for 135 yards and three touchdowns.  Josh Letson had three receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns, while David Baggett rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns on eight attempts.  The Lightning finished with 385 totals yards with 250 of those yards being on the ground.

“Real solid all-around offensive effort by our team tonight,” Lightning coach Del Clayton said.

The Lightning defense pitched their second shutout of the season.

“Defensively another strong performance,” Clayton said.

Baggett started the scoring for the Lightning with a 32-yard touchdown run at the 7:46 mark of the opening quarter.  Dru Bell added the extra point.

Thompson found Letson for a 55-yard touchdown pass seven minutes later to put the Lightning up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lightning scored four touchdowns in the second quarter.  Mason Murphy had a 38-yard touchdown run.  Baggett added a pair of touchdowns of 39 and 31 yards while Andrew Thompson found Letson for a 10-yard touchdown pass to cap off the scoring in the quarter.

The only points of the second half came when Thompson found Caleb Hoge for a 10-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Evangel plays rival Hope Christian for the Alabama Christian Sports Conference championship next week.

“They are a very good team,” Clayton said. “We will have our work cut out for us.  They are by far the best team in the state and it will be a great challenge and great opportunity for us.”
