Strong, Thompson lead county runners at Hoover meet

NORTH SHELBY – Spain Park’s Jordan Strong and Chelsea’s Cheyenne Thompson each finished in the top-10 of their respective races at the Hoover Invitational Cross County Meet on Oct. 25.

Strong took sixth in the Class 6A boys 5k race while Thomspon took fourth in the girls race.

Rome Flore joined Strong in the top-10 with an eighth place finish to lead the Jaguars to a fourth place finish in the team standings. Oak Mountain took ninth in the team rankings while Chelsea took 11th and Briarwood Christian finished 13th.

Thompson was joined in the top-20 by Briarwood Christian’s Mallory Mathias. Mathias took 20th with a time of 21:17.58.

The Lady Hornets took sixth in the team standings while Briarwood finished eighth. Spain Park ranked ninth in the final team standings while Oak Mountain took 12th.

Maddie Hoaglund of Westminster School at Oak Mountain won the girls’ 1A-5A race with a time of 21:09.76. Sarah Kate Lipperd (22:25.01) and Olivia Brookins (23:44.31) finished fourth and 17th respectively to lead Westminster to a second place finish in the team standings.

Carter Lemons took fifth of Westminster led a pack of five runners to lead their team to a first place finish in the team standings. Lemons was joined by Logan Richburg (7th), Noah Thompson (10th), Nathan Deen (19th) and Scott Landers (20th) in the Knights’ team championship.

Area teams are preparing for their respective sectional meets next week.
