Volleyball teams set for super regional tournaments

Seven Shelby County volleyball teams will be making the trips to Montgomery or Huntsville to take part in the AHSAA Super Regional Tournament set to begin on Friday, Oct. 26.

Oak Mountain, Thompson, Pelham, Calera and Montevallo will travel south to Montgomery while Briarwood Christian and Shelby Country will head north to Huntsville.

The Oak Mountain Lady Eagles will take on Northview in the first round of the Class 6A Super Regional Tournament at 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 26. The Lady Eagles (31-6) won Area 8 last week while the Cougars finished second in Area 4.

Thompson and Pelham will both play their first round games of the 6A Super Regional at 6:45 p.m. on Friday. Thompson (20-15), Area 7 champions, will face Daphne (16-27) who finished second in Area 3.

The Lady Panthers (17-16) will take on Enterprise (25-15), winners of Area 4.

The Shelby County Wildcats (19-13) will face off with Arab (35-18) at 11:30 a.m. in the Class 5A Super Regional held in Huntsville. The Wildcats won Area 10 last week while Arab finished second in Area 14.

Briarwood Christian will also play in the 11:30 a.m. slot when they face Boaz (42-16). The Lady Lions are coming off a runner-up finish at the Area 9 tournament while Boaz won Area 13.

The Calera Lady Eagles (29-9) are coming off a strong showing in the Class 4A, Area 7 tournament last week and will face Ashford in the 4A Super Regional in Montgomery. Ashford finished second in Area 3.

The Montevallo High School volleyball team will take on Montgomery Catholic on Friday at 12:45 p.m. in the 3A Super Regional. The Lady Dogs (19-9) took second in the Area 8 tournament last week while Montgomery Catholic is the Area 4 champion.

With a win on Friday, teams will play on Saturday for a chance to make the state volleyball tournament. The top four teams from each super regional will advance to the Elite Eight Finals held at the Birmingham Metro Crossplex on Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
