Falcons clinch conference tournament bid with win in “Think Pink” match

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team claimed the final spot in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference tournament with a 3-1 win over visiting Young Harris College in its annual “Think Pink” match Oct. 27 benefitting the Susan G. Komen For the Cure foundation.

The Falcons’ four seniors, Alyssa MaxwellBritt GableKaty Hutto, and Nicola Stolworthy, were also honored following the final regular season match.

“It’s exciting to be back in the playoffs,” said Montevallo coach Patricia Hughes, who guided the Falcons back to the Peach Belt Conference tournament following a one-year absence. “It was a great day all around.”

Montevallo players took the field wearing their “Give cancer the boot” pink t-shirts. The team also recognized five special members of the Montevallo community who have been directly or indirectly impacted by breast cancer.

After the match, the Falcons welcomed their special guests and other members of the Montevallo community to a “Think Pink” luncheon.

Junior Christine Prince, sophomore Brittany Woodhouse and freshman Jade Pennock scored one goal each to lift the Falcons (7-8-2 overall, 4-6-1 in Peach Belt Conference) to the 3-1 win over Young Harris.

Pennock gave the Falcons an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on a penalty kick following a foul in front of the Young Harris net.

Woodhouse finished a cross from Pennock in the 22nd minute to give Montevallo a 2-0 advantage. Following a Young Harris goal by Mika Lopes in the 32nd minute, the Falcons carried a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Prince netted a goal in the 53rd minute of the match off an assist by Camilla Alderin to secure the two-goal victory for the Falcons.

Montevallo goalkeeper Taylor Kerr finished with five saves in the match.

Montevallo will travel to top seed Armstrong Atlantic State University in a Peach Belt Conference tournament quarterfinal match Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to a conference tournament semifinal match Nov. 2 in Evans, Ga.
