Falcons hosting Clayton State in conference tournament opener

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo men’s soccer team will host a quarterfinal match in the Peach Belt Conference tournament for the fourth consecutive season.

The Falcons earned the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. Montevallo (10-4-2) will host No. 7 seed Clayton State University (7-7-1) in a quarterfinal match Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at Varsity Field. The winner will advance to a Peach Belt Conference tournament semifinal match Nov. 2 at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.

Montevallo is 3-0 in three previous quarterfinal matches at Varsity Field. The Falcons have defeated Francis Marion University in a conference tournament quarterfinal match each season for the past three years.

Montevallo defeated Clayton State 2-0 in a road match in late September. Junior Jackson Tolleson and freshman Pierre Omanga scored one goal each in the Falcons’ victory, while junior goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway finished with five saves as he posted his fourth consecutive shoutout.

Omanga led the Falcons with 10 goals during the regular season, which placed him in a tie for fourth among the leading goal scorers in the Peach Belt Conference. Sophomore Giuliano Frano finished second among assists leaders in the conference with nine assists during the regular season.

Ledgeway enters the conference tournament leading goalkeepers in the conference with a microscopic 0.56 goals against average. Ledgeway is also second in the conference with a .824 save percentage.

The Falcons are 6-2 all time in Peach Belt Conference tournament history. Montevallo captured the conference tournament crown during the 2010 season. The Falcons fell to Flagler College 3-1 in the conference tournament title match last season.

Montevallo made 12 appearances in the Gulf South Conference tournament before joining the Peach Belt Conference in 2009. The Falcons are making their fourth appearance in the Peach Belt Conference tournament.

Montevallo owns three conference tournament championships in school history, including Gulf South Conference tournament crowns in 1999 and 2004 and a Peach Belt Conference tournament title in 2010.

Admission to the Peach Belt Conference tournament quarterfinal match is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12-and-under. All students who attend a Peach Belt Conference school will be admitted free with a valid ID.
