Falcons take down King College in non-conference match

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win on the road at King College in its final road match of the regular season Oct. 29.

The Falcons topped King College 25-12 in the opening set before dropping a 25-16 decision in the second set. Montevallo closed out the match with a 25-21 win in the third set and a 25-12 victory in the fourth set.

Sophomore Michelle Walker led the Falcons (13-13) with 13 kills in the victory.

Junior Manyi Ati added nine kills. Junior Michelle Carle and freshman Rebekah Phelps contributed seven kills each, while sophomore Brianna Guzinski finished with six kills to go along with 12 digs.

Junior Kaleigh Harvey led Montevallo with 16 digs. Freshman Briana Marquez contributed a team-high 40 assists.

The Falcons took care of business quickly in a 25-12 victory in the first set, which ended with a 3-0 run on back-to-back kills by senior Jordan Spinks and a King College attack error.

Montevallo opened the second set with a 7-2 run, capped with a block by Carle, before the Tornado stormed back to claim the set 25-16. King College opened the third set with a 7-0 run, but the Falcons rallied down the stretch to pull out a 25-21 win in the set. Guzinski posted three kills in a row to clinch the set.

The Falcons coasted to a 25-12 win in the final set, with Ati posting a pair of kills late in the set to help Montevallo close out the 3-1 victory in the match.

The Falcons’ non-conference match against Concord University scheduled to be played following the match against King College was cancelled due to precaution in advance of Hurricane Sandy, which is impacting travel near the Concord University campus in Athens, W. Va.

The Falcons traveled to Bristol, Tenn. from Lander, S.C. following a Peach Belt Conference match Oct. 27 against Lander University. The Montevallo volleyball players spent their off day Oct. 28 touring one of the most famous stops on the NASCAR circuit, Bristol Motor Speedway.

Montevallo returns home to take on Armstrong Atlantic State University in a Peach Belt Conference match Nov. 2. The Falcons will host Flagler College in another conference match Nov. 3.

The Nov. 3 match against Flagler College will feature a door prize drawing for a brand new men’s Swiss Luminox watch valued at $275. Tickets, which are limited to 100, are on sale for $5 each. A group of five tickets is on sale for $20.

The will be on sale in the Anna Irvin Dining Hall at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 30 and Thursday, Nov. 1, or can be purchased from a Montevallo volleyball player or coach. Tickets can also be purchased during Friday night’s match and before the match Saturday.
