Oak Mountain advances to 6A state tournament

MONTGOMERY – The Oak Mountain Lady Eagles took the second seed out of the Class 6A South Super Regional and are headed to the Elite Eight state volleyball tournament starting on Oct. 31.

The Lady Eagles (34-7) clinched a spot in the final eight with a 25-14, 30-28, 25-1 sweep of Robertdale in the second round of the super regional tournament on Oct. 27.

Oak Mountain beat Carver-Montgomery 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-19) in the semifinals, but fell to McGill-Toolen 3-1 (23-25, 11-25, 25-23, 12-25) in the Super Regional finals to take the No. 2 seed into the state tournament.

Hannah Kowal totaled 48 kills, 25 digs and five aces in the Lady Eagles three games on Saturday. Emily Cosgrove had 50 kills, 14 digs and six blocks while Hannah Beach added 25 kills, 76 assists, 23 digs and eight aces. Rosemary Wendel finished with 40 assists, 18 digs and five aces.

Oak Mountain defeated Northview 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-17) in the first round of the tournament on Oct. 26.

Cosgrove had 13 kills, five digs and four blocks in the first round match-up. Beach added 15 assists, 10 kills and seven digs.

The Lady Eagles will take on Grissom at 3 p.m. on Oct. 31 to open play at the Elite Eight state volleyball tournament.
