HOOVER — Spain Park students stranded in New York City in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy likely won’t be home for Halloween, as a flight booked for Oct. 31 has been canceled.

A group of Spain Park students and teachers flew to New York last week to participate in a mock trial competition. They are staying in a Marriott hotel close to the Brooklyn Bridge.

Originally, the students were slated to fly back home Oct. 29, but that flight was canceled due to weather.

According to Hoover City Schools spokesperson Jason Gaston, the group then booked a flight for Wednesday, Oct. 31, but that flight has now been canceled as airport officials deal with cleanup efforts following the storm.

Just after 8 p.m. on Oct. 30, Jason Gaston said in an email the Spain Park group now has a flight booked for Thursday, Nov. 1.

“Let’s keep our fingers crossed that that is the day they come back,” Gaston said in the email.
